Rooftop Rodeo Rides Through Estes Park for Another Unforgettable Celebration
2026 Rooftop Rodeo Parade in Estes Park | A Western Tradition Through Downtown
There are some traditions that simply define summer in Estes Park, and the Rooftop Rodeo is certainly one of them.
Yesterday, downtown Estes Park came alive as horses, rodeo royalty, local organizations, youth groups, and beautifully decorated entries made their way along Elkhorn Avenue for the annual Rooftop Rodeo Parade. The streets were lined several people deep as families, visitors, and longtime residents waved flags, cheered for the participants, and celebrated one of the town's most anticipated events.
Walking through the crowd, you couldn't help but notice the excitement on every corner. Children sat on curbs waiting for the next horse to pass. Visitors stopped to take photos. Friends greeted one another like neighbors often do in a mountain town where community still means something.
One of the highlights of the parade was seeing so many riders on horseback representing the western heritage that has been part of Estes Park for generations. The rodeo queens, dressed in vibrant western attire, smiled and waved from horseback as they made their way through downtown. Their presence, along with dozens of other riders, reminded everyone that the Rooftop Rodeo is much more than a sporting event. It's a celebration of Colorado's ranching traditions and the western lifestyle that continues to thrive here.
The Cheley Colorado Camps were well represented, continuing a tradition that has introduced generations of young people to the mountains surrounding Estes Park. Local clubs, businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations all joined the celebration, each adding something unique to the afternoon.
As I watched the parade, it struck me how perfectly it captures what makes Estes Park special. You have spectacular mountain scenery, horses walking down Main Street, local businesses filled with visitors, families making memories, and a community that still takes pride in gathering together for traditions that have stood the test of time.
The Rooftop Rodeo itself continues throughout the week, bringing top professional rodeo competitors from across the country to Estes Park. Each performance features classic rodeo events including bareback riding, saddle bronc riding, bull riding, barrel racing, tie-down roping, steer wrestling, and team roping. Whether you're a lifelong rodeo fan or attending for the first time, the atmosphere inside the rodeo grounds is something every visitor should experience at least once.
For many people, a summer vacation to Estes Park begins with an event like yesterday's parade. For others, it's the moment they realize this mountain community feels different from anywhere else they've visited. Over the years, I've met countless families who first came here for the Rooftop Rodeo or a Fourth of July vacation and eventually decided to make Estes Park their permanent home.
That's one of the things I love most about living here. We aren't just surrounded by incredible scenery. We're surrounded by traditions that bring people together year after year.
Thank you to everyone who organized the parade, volunteered their time, cared for the horses, participated in the festivities, and lined the streets to support another successful Rooftop Rodeo celebration. Events like this are a reminder that Estes Park isn't simply a destination on a map. It's a community where western heritage, small-town hospitality, and mountain living continue to come together.
If you're visiting this week, I encourage you to take in a rodeo performance, explore downtown, enjoy our local restaurants and shops, and experience why so many people fall in love with Estes Park.
Who knows? Your summer vacation might just become the beginning of your own Estes Park story.
Until next time,
Gerald Mayo
