On the evening of July 31, 1976, an extraordinary rainstorm turned the Big Thompson River east of Estes Park into a devastating wall of water. The flood tore through Big Thompson Canyon, destroying homes, businesses, bridges, and sections of highway while taking more than 140 lives. It became one of the deadliest natural disasters in Colorado history and permanently changed the Estes Park region.
