On July 15, 1982, Lawn Lake Dam failed high inside Rocky Mountain National Park. The released water rushed down Roaring River, entered Fall River, and continued toward Estes Park. The flood killed three people, transformed portions of the park, and sent water and debris into downtown Estes Park, where businesses and homes suffered extensive damage.
The Lawn Lake Flood began far above Estes Park in the mountains of Rocky Mountain National Park.
Lawn Lake sits in the high country of the Mummy Range. An artificial dam had enlarged the natural lake decades before the area became part of Rocky Mountain National Park.
On the morning of July 15, 1982, that dam failed.
A massive volume of water was suddenly released into the steep mountain drainage below.

Three people were killed in the Lawn Lake Flood.
The death toll was far lower than during the 1976 Big Thompson Flood, but that does not diminish the tragedy experienced by the victims, their families, witnesses, and rescuers.
The relatively limited loss of life compared with the scale of the flood reflected, in part, the location and timing of the event and the emergency response as water moved downstream.
Once water continued beyond Horseshoe Park, it traveled down the Fall River drainage toward developed areas.
Properties along the river were vulnerable as the flood moved out of Rocky Mountain National Park and toward Estes Park.
The flood carried water, sediment, and debris through a corridor containing roads, buildings, lodging properties, businesses, and homes.
Unlike the Big Thompson disaster six years earlier, this flood was headed directly toward the town.
Floodwater eventually entered downtown Estes Park.
According to the National Park Service, 177 businesses in Estes Park were inundated by several feet of water and mud, while 108 private homes were damaged.
Businesses faced flooded interiors, mud, debris, damaged inventory, structural problems, and the enormous task of cleaning and rebuilding.
The commercial heart of Estes Park had become part of the flood zone.
National Park Service records report that 177 Estes Park businesses were affected by floodwater and mud.
Private residences were also damaged as the flood moved through developed portions of Estes Park.
The flood struck one of the most economically important parts of the community.
The Lawn Lake Flood occurred only six years after the catastrophic Big Thompson Flood of 1976.
The two disasters are sometimes confused because both are closely connected with Estes Park history.
But they had different causes and followed different paths.
Extreme rainfall created a catastrophic flash flood through Big Thompson Canyon east of Estes Park.

Today, the waterways running through Estes Park contribute greatly to the character of downtown.
Pedestrian paths, bridges, landscaping, seating areas, businesses, and public spaces allow people to experience the river at close range.
That peaceful setting can make it difficult to imagine the destructive force that moved through the same general corridor in 1982.
The contrast is one of the most striking examples of how Estes Park has adapted to its mountain environment.
One of the most visible reminders of the Lawn Lake Flood is the Alluvial Fan.
The broad field of boulders and debris provides a dramatic example of the amount of material moving water can transport.
Vegetation has returned and the landscape continues to evolve, but the flood's geological signature remains visible.
For visitors who know the history, the area becomes more than a scenic stop. It becomes an outdoor history lesson.
After the dam failed, Lawn Lake was no longer held at the enlarged level created by the old reservoir structure.
