For Estes Park, the change was especially important.
Travelers were no longer entirely dependent on rail connections, stage services, horses, or organized transportation. Increasingly, families could travel on their own schedules and bring their own vehicles into the mountains.
But automobiles required something horses did not: roads engineered for motor traffic.
Freelan Oscar Stanley arrived in Estes Park during the same era in which automobiles were beginning to reshape American transportation.
Stanley and his twin brother were already famous for the steam-powered Stanley automobile.
F.O. Stanley's involvement in Estes Park extended beyond the Stanley Hotel. He supported improvements that helped modernize the community and make it more accessible to travelers.
Better roads were essential to the future of a destination increasingly dependent on automobile tourism.
Rocky Mountain National Park was established in 1915.
